After extensive bibliographic research, various factors associated with safe behavior were identified, in short, that differentiated people who suffered more or fewer accidents at work.

This extensive research was systematized and validated through various studies, finally allowing the identification of four factors associated with safe behavior, which have been validated in multiple investigations.

The four fundamental factors associated with safe work conduct are:

  • Self-control. This factor measures the level of emotional stability, since those people with greater stability and emotional balance would have a lower probability of having an accident at work. According to evidence, people who are more anxious, unstable and have a lower tolerance for stress would be more likely to suffer accidents in the workplace.
  • Compliance with Rules. This factor measures the degree to which people would tend to respect safety regulations and adhere to protocols, favoring safe behavior, therefore, having a lower probability of being involved in workplace accidents. The evidence collected shows that greater compliance with standards would be associated with greater social integration and altruism, adherence to standards and having an internal locus of control, which together increase the probability of compliance with safety standards.
  • Prudence – Risk Aversion. This factor evaluates the degree to which people who avoid taking risks and dangerous situations have a lower probability of accidents. It has been documented in various studies that people who seek to experience new sensations would be more exposed to workplace accidents, since they have resistance to monotony, inciting reckless behavior. On the other hand, people with greater impulsiveness, in certain cases, would skip safety procedures, potentially causing an accident at work.
  • Concentration. This factor measures the probability of being careful, meticulous and attentive to details and, in this way, reducing the occurrence of workplace accidents. It has been shown that distracted or more extroverted people lose attention to the details or risks present at work, potentially causing an accident at work.

How was the Safe Behavioral DNA security test created?

Safe Behavioral DNA was originally developed by the company VYA CONSULTING GROUP at the request of the Bolivar Risk Administrator in Colombia, an institution that provides tools and solutions in the area of risk prevention to more than 1 million workers in Colombia.

For its creation, firstly, an extensive bibliographic review of the individual traits associated with work accidents was initially carried out, developing a preliminary questionnaire applied to a thousand workers belonging to 11 companies from different productive sectors, such as construction, mining, transportation, industry, services, among others.

The sample of one thousand workers considered two groups of employees: 600 who had suffered documented workplace accidents in the last two years and 400 who had not experienced accidents in the same period, both groups belonging to the same positions and selected companies.

A 136-item questionnaire was developed aimed at differentiating both groups, reaching a reliability of 0.93 and significant differences between both. The constructed model was based on extensive original scientific evidence, identifying four factors that differentiated both groups of workers in terms of their accident history: Compliance with Standards, Self-control, Prudence – Risk Aversion and Concentration.

These four factors are fundamental when differentiating people according to their safe work behavior in companies.

After a couple of years of international studies, covering countries such as Mexico, Chile, Peru, Russia, India, Italy, among others, it was decided to develop two special and reduced versions of the original model, based on more than 200 thousand applications.

– Safe Behavioral DNA R, 77-item version, applied in 12 minutes, implementing a series of improvements compared to the original version.

– Safe Behavioral DNA DRIVER, 84-item version, aimed exclusively at the selection and evaluation of drivers and vehicle drivers.

Both solutions operate online and provide a detailed report on the actions to be implemented in their use for evaluation of current workers.

Currently, the Safe Behavioral DNA workplace safety test is used in various Latin American countries by companies interested in reducing workplace accidents and risk behaviors by improving their personnel selection processes.

Among the countries where it is mostly used, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, among others, stand out.

Does it effectively predict safe performance? How has it been validated?

Multiple studies have been carried out in various companies in several countries, which can significantly impact the rate of workplace accidents by improving their personnel selection processes.

MEXICAN COMPANY REDUCES WORKPLACE RISKS

An important Mexican industrial company applied the Safe Behavioral DNA R test to almost 4 thousand candidates in its personnel selection processes for production operators.

The almost 4 thousand candidates were grouped according to their score on the SBDNA R global indicator, according to the 10 score categories, grouping them into low probability of safe behavior (1-3), medium (4-6) and high ( 7-10).

The questionnaire includes questions about work accidents suffered previously, obtaining a rate of 22% for this group, that is, 22% of the almost 4 thousand candidates evaluated acknowledge having had a previous accident.

When comparing each score zone (1-10), a linear relationship is clearly seen between self-report of accidents and SBDNA R score, that is, the higher the SBDNA R score, the lower the rate of work accidents and vice versa. For example, 75% of candidates with a score of 1 (the lowest) declare having had an accident, 65% of candidates with a score of 2 declare having had an accident, and so on. At the other end of the highest scores (9-10), they do not declare accident history in their self-report.
